Brother of Fire and Folly pulls its manic, mischievous energy from Des Teufels russiger Bruder —The Devil’s Sooty Brother—a lesser-known, absolutely unhinged Brothers Grimm tale. Illustrated by Philipp Grot Johann in 1912, this design transforms classical children’s book etchings into a wearable act of rebellion.

The outer panels explode with kinetic scenes: bargains struck, devils greeted, identities shed like snakeskin. It’s a visual folktale in motion, framed by the text itself—carved in German, charred in violet.

On the inner panels, we get narrative momentum: figures dash, collapse, scheme. It’s the story of a man who outwits even the Devil, but only after serving him with sooty hands and a crooked smile. The devil’s not just in the details—he’s everywhere, in shadowed corners and wide-eyed gestures.
