According to the Laments’ apocryphal field guide Insects of Sorrow and Style, these shoes were once owned by a taxidermist-turned-mourner who claimed to officiate funerals for moths, bees, and other winged melancholies. The Deathmoth design came to him in a dream after being stung by a wasp in the shape of a violin. Upon waking, he was barefoot. The shoes had flown off without him.
